Being a primary vs. additional cardholder

In a nutshell, what’s actually changing?

Starting June 10, 2026, there will only be 2 types of cardholders:

Primary cardholders

Starting on June 10, the person designated as the primary cardholder will be solely liable for paying the balance of all cards associated with the credit card account.

They will be solely responsible for managing the account.

They will be able to increase their credit limit directly on AccèsD.

They will be able to authorize one or more additional cardholders to view transactions and access statements for all cards on the account.

Additional cardholders who were jointly and severally liable

Individuals designated as additional cardholders will retain full use of their cards.

They will be able to make transactions, check their own transactions, manage their credit card and continue to enjoy card-related benefits like Travel Insurance and access to the Desjardins Odyssey Lounge at Montréal-Trudeau International Airport.

They will also continue to be jointly and severally liable for all debts incurred prior to June 10, 2026.

What is a primary cardholder?

The primary cardholder is the authorized credit card account holder. They are the person who applies for the card, and they will assume full legal responsibility for the account as of June 10, 2026.

The credit check carried out as part of the application process is based on this cardholder.

They are the only person authorized to close the account.

They are able to access all information about the account in AccèsD.

They manage the account, including the credit limits and adding or removing authorized users.

After these changes take effect, they will be able to apply for a credit limit increase on AccèsD, which they weren't able to do when there was a liable additional cardholder on their account.

Starting on June 10, 2026, they will be liable for paying off all debts incurred with all cards on the account. That means they will be required to pay the full balance on the account, including purchases made by additional cardholders. They will also be the only person who receives monthly account statements, if they don't authorize access for one or more additional cardholders. However, additional cardholders will still be able to make payments on the account.

If there was a jointly and severally liable additional cardholder, they will remain responsible for all debts incurred on the credit card before June 10, 2026.

What is an additional cardholder and what actions are they authorized to take?

Any other cardholder on the account will be considered an additional cardholder.

They are not liable for the balance on the account. If they were a jointly and severally liable additional cardholder on June 9, they will continue to be jointly and severally liable for any balance on the account accumulated up until that date.

No credit check is carried out for additional cardholders.

They have limited access to certain information and features in AccèsD.

They're able to see information about their card and their own transactions, but won’t be able to make any changes to the account (for example, no address changes, credit limit changes, account transfers or redemption of BONUSDOLLARS®).

They're still able to manage their own card, including managing their PIN, activating and locking their card and setting up transaction alerts.

What do these changes mean for primary cardholders and additional cardholders who were jointly and severally liable?

As of June 10, 2026, jointly and severally liable additional cardholders will become non-liable additional cardholders. The primary cardholder’s role will remain unchanged, and they will be able to delegate a number of features to additional cardholders.

Starting in June, if no additional features are delegated to an additional cardholder, they will only see the cumulative balance of their own transactions in AccèsD. Only the primary cardholder will be able to see the total balance of their own transactions, along with the transactions made by all additional cardholders.

Former jointly and severally liable additional cardholders will be able to get information about the account for the period when they were jointly and severally liable, which ends on June 9, by phone.

Primary cardholders and jointly and severally liable additional cardholders will continue to be jointly and severally liable for all debts incurred on the account as of June 9, 2026, including any financing. Starting June 10, the primary cardholder will be solely liable for all financing plans.

Starting June 10, 2026, the credit check will apply to the primary cardholder only.

How do primary cardholders give additional cardholders more access to their account?

Starting in June, primary cardholders will be able to delegate several AccèsD features to one or more additional cardholders.

What new responsibilities apply to primary cardholders?

After June 15, they'll be able to apply for a credit limit increase on AccèsD, which they weren’t able to do when there was an additional cardholder who was jointly and severally liable on their account.

The primary cardholder and the additional cardholder who was jointly and severally liable for the balance on the card will continue to be liable for any balance on the card accumulated before June 10, 2026. However, the primary cardholder will be solely liable for all debts incurred starting June 10, 2026.

What does the primary cardholder need to do for the additional cardholder who was jointly and severally liable to get their own credit card account?

The additional cardholder who was jointly and severally liable must apply to open a new credit card account via Desjardins’s online services.

Will additional cardholders who were jointly and severally liable automatically get their own accounts?

Credit cards are not issued automatically. A person who wishes to get their own credit card account must apply. A credit check will be carried out, and if it is successful, the person will be able to open their own account according to the current terms and conditions.

Will additional cardholders who were jointly and severally liable lose their credit history?

The credit history of the additional cardholder who was jointly and severally liable will no longer be affected by the account after June 10. However, the portion of their credit history recorded prior to these changes will not be lost.

How do you add an additional cardholder to an existing account?

The primary cardholder must add them on AccèsD.

How does a primary cardholder remove an additional cardholder from their credit card account?

The primary cardholder must speak to one of our advisors over the phone to remove an additional cardholder from their credit card account.

How does an additional cardholder who was jointly and severally liable find out the balance they’re still liable for after June 10?

There are 2 ways for an additional cardholder who was jointly and severally liable (or non-liable cardholder after June 10) to find out the balance they’re liable for:

  • Using their account statement:
Additional cardholders who were jointly and severally liable can refer to their last account statement to see the transactions made up to and including June 9 to estimate the corresponding balance.
  • By phone:
They can call Desjardins to find out the balance as at June 10. This option is recommended when there is an interest-bearing balance, so they can determine exactly how much they owe.

To make a payment, the additional cardholder who was jointly and severally liable can add the credit card account to their list of bills or make a transfer between accounts on AccèsD.

How does the end of joint and several liability affect the coverage included with my credit card?

The coverage included with your card remains the same, whether you’re the primary cardholder or an additional cardholder.

Different cards include different coverage. Here are some examples:

  • Travel Insurance
  • Mobile Device Insurance
  • Purchase Protection
  • Extended Warranty
  • Car rental insurance
