Understanding ATM fees

There are 3 types of ATM fees: user fees, network access fees and convenience fees (surcharges). Here's some useful information to help you better understand your transaction record or account statement when you complete a transaction at an ATM.

User fees

If you don't have a transaction plan or if you exceed the number of transactions included in your plan, you pay fees for:

  • Withdrawals
  • Transfers
  • Bill payments

Network access and convenience fees are added if you withdraw money from an ATM that isn't part of our network or the network of one of our partners (AccuLink, Desjardins Bank or Crédit Mutuel).

Network access fees

These fees are added when you use an Interac network ATM in Canada or PLUS network ATM internationally.

They are shown separately from the user fee on another line in your transaction records and monthly account statements.

Convenience fees (surcharges)

Other financial institutions and non-bank ATM operators may charge a convenience fee when you use their ATM.

These fees are then added to the amount of the withdrawal and paid directly to the ATM operator.

Good to know

Withdrawals at a Desjardins Bank ATM in Florida or a Crédit Mutuel ATM in France are included in your transaction plan. Keep that in mind on your next trip to one of these destinations!

6 ways to pay less in service fees

  • Choose a transaction plan that suits your needs and stay within the transaction limit and minimum monthly balance.
  • Avoid fees from other financial institutions by using our ATMs 13  whenever possible.
  • Make it easier to track your finances by signing up for Desjardins notifications and email alerts on AccèsD.
  • Pay off your credit card in one monthly payment instead of several, each of which counts as a separate transaction.
  • Save on cheques by sending funds by Interac e-Transfer and Desjardins money transfer on AccèsD.
  • Change from paper to online statement and reduce both paper consumption and service fees.

FAQ

Am I charged for all my transactions?

No, not all transactions carry a fee. The following transactions and services are always free, even if you don't have a transaction plan:

  • Deposits (including direct and mobile deposits)
  • Account balance information
  • Online account statements
  • Recorded statements of recent transactions by AccèsD Telephone
  • Transaction summaries at Desjardins ATMs and on AccèsD
  • Line of credit payments
  • Automatic transfers between accounts in a single folio
Do I have to pay other service fees in addition to the monthly fee for my plan?

As long as you keep to the number and type of transactions included in your plan, you won't have any other fees to pay for your regular transactions.

Transactions that exceed the maximum allowed under your plan or that are not included in your plan are charged at the per-transaction rate. The same goes for additional services and foreign currency fees, among others.

Remember that additional fees apply to withdrawals made at non-Desjardins ATMs. 4

When are service fees charged?

Service fees are charged at different times depending on their type.

  • Plan fee and excess transaction fees: end of month
  • Account maintenance fees: beginning of month
  • Other fees: at the time of the transaction
What is AccuLink?

AccuLink is an ATM network owned by the Canadian Credit Union Association External link. , of which we are a part. It has approximately 2,000 ATMs across Canada.

As a member, you can use your Desjardins Access Card to make free withdrawals at AccuLink ATMs.

AccuLink ® is a registered trademark owned by the Canadian Credit Union Association (CCUA), used under licence. Interac ® and Interac e-Transfer ® are registered trademarks of Interac Corp. Used under licence. * PLUS is a trademark of Visa International Service Association and used under licence. Cheque and pre-authorized payment transactions cannot be completed in a Regular Savings Account. Interace-Transfers and Desjardins money transfers aren't available via the AccèsD Telephone service.  Transaction fees also apply to the USD Build-Up Savings Account. Additional fees of $1.50, $3.00 or $5.00 may apply to withdrawals made from non-Desjardins ATMs affiliated with the  Interac and PLUS networks. Some ATM operators also charge their own fees to use their machines. They must notify you via an on-screen message before processing the transaction, so you can choose to cancel the transaction. These fees are added to the amount of the withdrawal and are paid directly to the ATM operator. For more information, see the  Service fees guide. Non-registered Regular Savings Accounts only. These charges are subject to the GST and QST (Quebec) or HST (Ontario). An overdraft is when your account is overdrawn, meaning that a cheque or pre-authorized payment was made when there were insufficient funds available. In this case, the caisse may, at its discretion, advance you the sum necessary to complete the transaction. Interest charges on cash advances start on the day of the transfers. Your credit card's interest rate applies to cash advances used for overdraft transfers. Service may be suspended due to a number of factors, such as the available credit limit for overdraft transfer, the card conditions, or applicable credit and security rules (for example, if amounts put on hold for pending transactions result in the credit limit being reached, or payment of an amount owing on the card is unduly late). Where appropriate, service is reinstated once the situation is resolved. Details and conditions on the Overdraft transfers page. Fees of $12.00 apply when depositing or cashing more than 1 item (cheque, money order or draft) if these items are in the same currency from the same country. Some correspondent banks may impose fees or additional charges, which will be deducted from the amount transferred. Applicable fees are calculated on the transferred amount received, or, as the case may be, on the amount in Canadian dollars resulting from the conversion of foreign currency. The conversion rate usually corresponds to the Desjardins rate at the time funds are received. Except Sundays from 2 AM to 6 AM.
