What is Alert?

AlertTM is a prevention program that includes a wireless home security system and a professional monitoring service subscription designed and operated by Roost. It's a kit delivered to your doorstep that you can install yourself and then manage through the Desjardins Insurance Home-Auto app.

How it works

  1. A sensor detects a problem, such as a potential fire or break-in.
  2. You get a notification or text message on your smartphone, depending on your settings.
  3. With a subscription to the monitoring service, you get a text message or call to confirm the alert. Depending on the alert, the central station may send emergency services to your home.

Rest assured that with this security system, you can act quickly if it detects an incident such as a water leak. In the event of a possible burglary or fire, the central monitoring station can send emergency services to your home. This Wi-Fi-based alarm system helps protect your property, whether it's a house, apartment or condo.

Roost will send you the full kit along with an installation and user guide. Follow the guide's step-by-step instructions for setting up and using the system's devices.

1 smart base

The smart base recognizes all the system's devices and adds them to the Alert control panel. It sends alerts to your smartphone if smoke, a break-in, a water leak, freezing temperatures or a power outage are detected. It also sends alerts to the 24/7 professional monitoring service through Roost.

1 keypad

The keypad lets you manually arm and disarm your security system. If you have the professional monitoring service, it also lets you trigger a silent panic alarm in the event of a break-in or imminent danger and emergency services will be notified.

3 door and window contacts

These sensors detect if a door or window is opened or closed. Their pre-attached adhesive tape makes them easy to install on most types of doors and windows. When your system is armed, an unwanted entry through a door or window will trigger an intrusion alert.

1 motion detector

This infrared sensor detects any movement in the zone it covers. When your system is armed, you'll receive an intrusion alert if motion is detected. You should install this device in a central area of your home.

2 water leak and freeze detectors

These detectors trigger an alert if they sense a water leak or significant temperature drop. Good places to install these devices include behind your washing machine or next to your water heater.

Water damage is the most common type of home insurance claim, and these detectors are a great way to help prevent and limit it.

1 smoke alarm listener

The smoke alarm listener must be installed near one of your smoke detectors (also known as smoke alarms in certain provinces). It listens for the alarm sound made by your smoke detector and triggers a smoke alert if it hears one.

The listener only works with T3 smoke alarms, which make 3 beeps followed by a pause. If you don't have a T3 smoke alarm, you can find one at most hardware stores.

The Alert program is designed for our insurance clients. It includes a home security system, valued at $295, and a subscription to a professional monitoring service, offered by Roost at $17 per month.

The system includes a set of devices to help protect your home and family. It's available at Roost's online store, where you can also buy additional devices if you wish.

Roost's professional monitoring service

You subscribe to the professional monitoring service at the same time that you buy the security system. With this subscription, your system connects to the 24/7 central monitoring station which may contact emergency services for certain types of alerts. It's reassuring to know your home can always be protected, even when you're not there. There is no long-term commitment required and you can cancel at any time.5

How to install your security system

You can easily set up this DIY home security system as soon as you receive it.

1. Download the Desjardins Insurance Home-Auto app and log in.

The app is where you'll manage all your devices. You can use it to arm and disarm the system when you're not at home. You'll also get notifications no matter where you are if the system detects an incident (like a break-in) or a device malfunction or issue (like a low battery).


2. Install the smart base following the steps in the guide.

You'll have to set it up in a central area of your home and then pair it with the mobile app. It will then be able to recognize the other system devices as you install them.


3. Follow the steps for the rest of the devices.

Each device is easy to self-install using pre-attached adhesive tape. The kit also comes with screws, but they're optional.

That's it! Your security system is all set up. You can now enjoy peace of mind knowing your home is well protected.

Who is Roost?

Roost is a company that specializes in smart home security solutions. They've been our trusted partner for the Alert program since the very beginning. They now offer a more extensive home security system that you manage yourself through the Desjardins Insurance Home-Auto app, as well as a 24/7 professional monitoring service.

Are my water and freeze detectors compatible with Roost's new security system if I got them before May 2022?

Unfortunately, no. If you're still enrolled in the old Alert program, your devices won't work under the new program. You can keep using your current system or take advantage of our limited-time offer for the new program, which includes many additional features including smoke and intrusion alerts.
