5 tools to manage your money with ease and help you eliminate fees

July 31, 2024

Feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day? When your schedule is full of things to do or think about—like paying bills on time—every extra minute counts. Here are 5 handy features that can help make your life easier and eliminate certain fees.

1. Simplify and automate your payments

The Desjardins app lets you pay bills as soon as you receive them, from virtually anywhere. Take advantage of a break between appointments or periods of a hockey game to make a payment on your smartphone.

If you already know the cost of some recurring bills—like your internet plan, property taxes, or your electricity bill—you can schedule payments in advance. Do it once a year, then forget about it!

Similarly, you can set up automatic transfers to avoid having to remember to contribute to registered savings plans like your TFSA, RRSP and RESP accounts. Set your savings goals for the year, divide the amount according to your pay schedule and automate your transactions. This strategy makes your life easier not only right now, but down the road as well, as you’ll have the money you need to turn your plans into reality.

2. Send money easily, whenever you need to

Interac e-Transfer is a quick and easy way to transfer money when you need to do things like send money to a friend, pay for those second-hand bargains you found or pay your rent.

Tip: Set up Interac e-Transfer® Autodeposit. This feature lets you automatically and securely deposit any Interac e-Transfers you receive into a pre-selected account, without answering a security question or logging in to AccèsD.

3. Receive alerts so you can act on time

With the constant flow of bills coming in, it’s easy to forget a due date or how much money you have in your account. To lighten your mental load, you can activate notifications and get a heads-up when specific events occur. For example:

  • The due date for your credit card payment is approaching and your minimum payment hasn’t yet been received.
  • The available credit on your credit card drops below a pre-set amount.
  • Your everyday account balance isn't enough to cover a pre-authorized payment.
  • Your account balance reaches the minimum balance you specified.

These alerts will help you respond in time and avoid any potential issues.

4. Choose the plan that's right for you!

If you regularly make more transactions than your plan allows, you can choose a new one that better suits your needs and lets you eliminate certain fees. Log into AccèsD, go to your Everyday Transaction Account and select Information then Plan and select Choose a plan to display a graph showing your transaction history for the past 3 months (on your computer). You can even eliminate monthly fees completely by keeping a minimum balance in your account throughout the month, as indicated in your plan details.

Your credit card can be used to pay bills and reduce the number of transactions from your everyday account. If you pay multiple bills this way, and then pay the full balance of your credit card once a month before the due date, this counts as just 1 transaction.

5. Deposit cheques securely with the Desjardins app.

With the Desjardins mobile services app, you can deposit a cheque anytime, anywhere, without having to stop at a point of service or ATM, simply by taking a photo of it with your smartphone or tablet.

Our online and mobile services will help you save time by reducing the number of trips you make to do your banking. They'll also help you get the most out of the effort you put into managing your money. Use the time you’ve saved to take a well-deserved break or tackle other things on your to-do list.
