Desjardins Ontario Credit Union honours young changemakers

OTTAWA, March 16, 2026 – The Desjardins Ontario Credit Union has awarded the 2026 ESG Leadership Bursary to Hiba Shaikh Ansari, Luka Parikh and Caroline Ryan. Each recipient receives a bursary of $5,000 in recognition of their community involvement and leadership in sustainable development or environmental, social or governance issues.

The winners were selected from a long list of applicants for their outstanding involvement in their respective fields and the unwavering dedication they’ve shown to their communities. Meet these inspiring leaders:

Caroline Ryan, University of Western Ontario – Caroline combines scientific expertise with real‑world action. Her leadership focuses on reducing plastic pollution and driving a circular economy by pursuing systems level system‑level solutions that extend beyond the laboratory. Her work in waste reduction and circularity drives meaningful change through tangible, community‑focused initiatives.

Hiba Shaikh Ansari, Huron University – Hiba demonstrates impactful leadership on climate governance by transforming personal concern into action. She has founded youth‑led initiatives that advance reforestation, sustainability education and community resilience. Through campus leadership and UN‑affiliated advocacy, she mobilizes people and resources to drive systemic change while ensuring marginalized communities are supported in the transition to a greener future.

Luka Parikh, University of Queens – An advocate for social justice and change, Luka stands out for his compassionate community leadership. His initiatives and volunteer work promote human decency and inclusivity. Most notably, he founded the Kingston Homeless Alliance, where he mobilizes volunteers, builds partnerships and drives creative solutions that strengthen social support systems and promote meaningful change.
