You must apply for health insurance within 60 days after your group insurance ends.

Eligibility criteria for health insurance

To be eligible for the Bronze, Silver and Gold options, you must:

  • Have group insurance with Desjardins or another insurer that's ending or has already ended
  • Have had healthcare coverage under your group plan
  • Have been actively at work when your group plan ended
  • Apply within 60 days of the date your group insurance ends
  • Be covered under your provincial healthcare and hospitalization insurance plan
  • Be a resident of Canada

To be eligible for the Gold option with optional dental care insurance, you must:

  • Have had dental care coverage under your group plan

Life insurance

Your group life insurance may end or be reduced in 3 situations:

  • You leave your job.
  • You retire.
  • You reach the age limit set out in your policy.

But you can maintain or extend your coverage by converting it to individual insurance.

You must submit your conversion request within 31 days of when your group insurance is reduced or ends.

Eligibility criteria for life insurance

  • You're 65 or younger.2
  • Your group insurance plan is ending or has been reduced.
  • You apply within 31 days of when your group insurance ends.
  • You had life insurance coverage under your group plan.
  • You aren't disabled when you apply.
  • You live in Canada.

Critical illness insurance

Your group critical illness insurance may end or be reduced3 in the following situations:

  • You leave or lose your job.
  • You retire.
  • You reach the age limit set out in your policy.

However, you can maintain or extend your coverage by converting it to individual critical illness insurance. This insurance applies to you and your partner. It does not cover children.

Individual critical illness insurance only covers 4 illnesses:

  • Stroke
  • Cancer (life-threatening)
  • Coronary artery bypass surgery
  • Heart attack (myocardial infarction)

You must submit your conversion request within 31 days of when your group insurance is reduced or ends.

Eligibility criteria for critical illness insurance

  • You're 65 or younger.2
  • Your group insurance plan is ending.
  • You apply within 31 days of when your group insurance ends.
  • You have critical illness insurance coverage under your group plan.
  • You aren't on disability leave when you apply.
  • You live in Canada.
