Group insurance claims

Need to file a group insurance claim? Find out how.

Before you start

  • Check your insurance booklet to see if the expense is covered.
  • Note that expensive medications or those with a risk of misuse may require prior authorization.
  • Keep a copy of the receipt in case your claim is audited.
  • Submit a treatment plan before buying a product or receiving treatment that costs over $500.

Have a health spending or wellness account?

These accounts help pay for certain expenses not covered by your plan.

Claiming expenses covered under multiple group plans

If your health and dental expenses are covered by more than one group insurance plan, you may be able to claim up to 100% of these expenses by submitting separate claims to each plan.

There are a few things to think about when deciding on what order to submit your claims to the different plans. The first thing to consider is the status of the person who incurred the expense.

Expenses incurred by the plan member

Scenario 1

You’re covered under a group insurance plan as an active plan member AND as a dependent under your spouse’s group plan.

Submit claims in this order:

  1. Your plan
  2. Your spouse’s plan

Scenario 2

You’re covered under two separate group insurance plans as an active plan member AND you’re covered as a dependent under your spouse’s group plan.

Submit claims in this order:

  1. The plan you’ve been covered under for the longest time as an active plan member
  2. The plan you’ve been covered under for the shortest time as an active plan member
  3. Your spouse’s plan

Scenario 3

You’re covered as an active plan member AND a retired plan member under 2 separate group insurance plans.

Submit claims in this order:

  1. The plan you’re covered under as an active plan member
  2. The plan you’re covered under as a retired plan member

Expenses incurred by a spouse

Scenario

Your spouse is covered as a plan member under their own group insurance plan AND as a dependent under your plan.

Submit claims in this order:

  1. Their plan
  2. Your plan

Expenses incurred by dependent children

Scenario 1

You live with the other parent of your children. Your children are covered under both your plan and your spouse’s plan.

Submit claims in this order:

  1. The plan of the parent whose birthday comes first in the calendar year (the year of birth is not taken into account)
  2. The plan of the other parent

Note: If both parents have the same birthday, the alphabetical order of the parents’ first names determines which plan to submit the claim to first.

Scenario 2

You’re separated and have shared custody of your children. Each parent has a new spouse and your children are covered under multiple plans (up to a total reimbursement of 100% of eligible expenses).

Submit claims in this order:

  1. The plan of the parent whose birthday comes first in the calendar year (the year of birth is not taken into account)
  2. The plan of the other parent
  3. The plan of the spouse of the parent whose birthday comes first
  4. The plan of the spouse of the other parent

Scenario 3

You’re separated and have sole custody of your children. Each parent has a new spouse and your children are covered under multiple plans (up to a total reimbursement of 100% of eligible expenses).

Submit claims in this order:

  1. Your plan
  2. Your current spouse’s plan
  3. Your ex’s plan
  4. Your ex’s current spouse’s plan

Scenario 4

Your dependent child is a post-secondary student and has a part-time job. Your child is covered through their job, their school and your group plan.

Submit claims in this order:

Medical and dental expenses

  1. Your child’s employer’s plan
  2. Your child’s student plan
  3. Your plan

Prescription drug expenses

  1. Your child’s employer’s plan
  2. Your plan
  3. Your child’s student plan

Note: You may need to submit claims in a different order for expenses incurred during a medical emergency that occurred outside your dependent child’s province of residence. If this is your situation, contact us.
