The Ahinadje initiative in Benin: Promoting sustainable practices that support job growth and environmental protection
As climate-related events continue to increase, the country of Benin faces a dual challenge in finding ways to protect its ecosystems while creating sustainable economic opportunities that benefit its people, particularly women and youth. This is the context that led to the creation of Ahinadje, an initiative that promotes sustainable practices to support job growth and environmental protection.
With financial backing from Global Affairs Canada, this joint initiative between Benin and Canada, implemented by Desjardins International Development (DID), aims to help small, women-led businesses with climate change resilience and inclusive economic growth. Ahinadje is unique in the sense that it combines environmental protection, economic empowerment and green job growth.
Nature-based solutions at the heart of the action
The initiative relies on nature-based solutions and sustainable practices in agri-food value chains. The goal is to minimize land degradation, preserve biodiversity, drive productivity in a sustainable manner and support green job growth, particularly for women and young people.
To reach these goals, Ahinadje promotes the following practices:
- The adoption of custom agroecological practices
- The sustainable transformation of agricultural products
The responsible management of natural resources
By supporting the way small businesses and women-led organizations are structured, the project will also improve access to markets and targeted financial services, thus helping to strengthen local economies and support green job growth.
Community-driven sustainable development
In addition to environmental aspects, the Ahinadje project helps transform local practices and attitudes within communities. It’s an initiative that highlights the central role of women as agents of change for the green transition, which is an essential driver of Benin’s sustainable economic and social development..
With Canada’s support, the Ahinadje project is a model to be emulated when it comes to promoting sustainable practices that support job growth and environmental protection, helping to build a more resilient and inclusive future for Benin.
