Alexis can't believe it. The withdrawals he made with his debit card yesterday at the Mountain Bike World Cup event cost him an extra $3 in user fees.

The best way to avoid this is to talk to an advisor at his Desjardins Caisse. The first thing he learns from the advisor is that any withdrawals made at an ATM belonging to another financial institution or a private supplier will have these types of fees. He also reminds him when he'll turn 18 soon, he'll have to pay regular transcation fees, so he should make sure to get the right plan.

If he doesn't go over the maximum number of transactions included in his plan, he won't have to pay any extra fees.

One thing he can do is take out some extra money when he pays with his debit card.

It's 2 transactions in 1!

It's easy to lose track of how much you spend if you don't see the money actually going through your hands.

You need to pay attention to your spending, and services online can make that easy.

Desjardins's AccèsD is a good example.

The advisor tells Alexis it's important to keep his PIN secret, since his card provides access to all of his money.

A PIN should be easy to remember but tough to guess.

Never write it on your debit card or keep it in your wallet. And NEVER tell anyone what it is. Not your friends, the police, or anyone at your caisse.

Your should feel safe at the ATM and make sure no one behind you can see you enter your PIN. If your card gets lost or is stolen, tell your caisse as soon as possible!

Alexis has a better idea about how to use his debit card now. He's not 18 quite yet, so he still gets unlimited transactions at his Desjardins caisse with the Youth Profit Account. But he'll need to think about everything the advisor told him when his next birthday comes around.
