114,519 trees planted

The first 2 editions of the Eco-friendly Statement Challenge turned out to be quite successful. A total of 114,519 members participated, thus showing a great interest in this project (92,295 participants from May to September 2006, 22,224 in November 2007).

As a result, 114,519 trees were planted, i.e. 115% of the triennial objective. We want to thank every Desjardins member for this most impressive response.

Through the challenge, Desjardins has replanted the equivalent of 140 football fields. Furthermore, by signing up 114,519 members for the online statement, we will save 6 million sheets of paper each year.

Thank you for making the Eco-friendly Statement Challenge a hit!

Desjardins would like to thank all of its members who took the 2nd edition of the Eco-friendly Statement Challenge which took place from November 1 to 30, 2007. A tree was planted for each member who replaced all paper statements of account (or passbooks), including the VISA Desjardins statement, with online statements on AccèsD Internet.

Members who did not have the opportunity to participate can still show their eco-friendliness by signing up for online statements and, by the same token, reduce paper consumption.

Earth Day

As an active partner of the Earth Day program, Desjardins plans to help slow climate change by planting 100,000 trees between 2007 and the end of 2009 in the regions of participating members. To do so, an organization in their region must present a tree planting project to the Corporation Saint-Laurent, administrator of Earth Day in Quebec and a Desjardins partner. Visit the Earth Day site for the procedure and to present a tree planting project (in French only).

The 100,000 trees will absorb over 300 tons of greenhouse gases (GHGs) from the atmosphere each year, according to the Chaire en Éco-conseil at the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi. Planting the trees will also reforest regions, improve wildlife habitats and beautify landscapes.
