Program

What is usage based insurance?

Usage based insurance is a new solution that's gaining popularity in the global auto insurance industry. Recent advances in telematics allow Desjardins Insurance to analyze some of your driving habits. We've joined forces with iMetrik, an international telematics leader, to bring you this program.

With the Ajusto program, the way your vehicle is driven has a direct impact on your car insurance savings.

Annual savings are based on:

  • Kilometres. Do you drive less than 15,000 km/year? This could save you up to 10%!

  • Acceleration and braking. The more smoothly your vehicle is driven, the bigger your savings. Smooth driving could save you up to 10%!

    • Are you a good driver?
You avoid accelerating fast and braking hard in your vehicle by not tailgating or speeding through yellow lights. It's these safe driving habits that make Ajusto perfect for you!

  • Travel times. Certain times of the day are less risky on the roads (example: weekend, during the day). Less risk means you could save up to 5%!

Based on the data collected for these 3 driving habits, Desjardins Insurance will calculate if you are eligible for renewal premium savings.

Who will benefit most from Ajusto?

You’ll benefit most from Ajusto if you drive less than 15,000 km a year. You could save as much as 25% on your renewal.

Do you drive less than 15,000 km a year?

Kilometres Acceleration
and braking
Travel times Annual savings
Up to 10% Up to 10% Up to 5% Up to 25%

If you drive more than 15,000 km a year, you could still save up to 15% on your renewal.

Do you drive more than 15,000 km a year?

Kilometres Acceleration
and braking
Travel times Annual savings
0% Up to 10% Up to 5% Up to 15%

Your Ajusto data will ONLY be used to calculate more savings for you – it will never result in an increase to your rate.

Note: The Ajusto program does not take driving speed into account.

It's very simple. You connect the telematics device in your car – it's as easy as a GPS.

When your vehicle is driven, the device collects selected data in real time on 3 driving habits: kilometres, hard braking and fast acceleration, and travel times. If there is more than one driver on the vehicle, their driving habits could impact how the potential savings will be calculated and applied to your renewal premium.

This selected data is then transmitted to Desjardins Insurance through a secure server.

You can log on to Online Client Services to view the driving profile of your vehicle and estimated annual savings.

Your personal information is completely confidential. It will never be used for purposes other than for your participation in Ajusto. For more information on the protection of your personal information, see the Conditions of use.

A few days after installing the device in your car, you can view your vehicles driving profile within your Online Client Service account. Your vehicle's driving profile and savings are available 24/7.

An online dashboard is available to review overall kilometres travelled, fast accelerations and hard braking, as well as the times of day your vehicle was driven.

You'll see how your vehicles driving profile affects your savings. Ajusto shows the estimated savings that could be applied upon your car insurance renewal. This estimate is updated monthly.

Remember savings are directly linked to how your vehicle is driven!

Here’s how your driving behaviour can help you save:

  1. Kilometres
Drive less than 15,000 km per year and save up to 10%.
The lower your annual kilometres, the closer you get to the maximum savings of 10%.

    • Why does Desjardins Insurance reward you for driving less?
It's simple: The less you drive, the less likely you are to have an accident. You deserve a reward from your insurer for driving less.

  2. Acceleration and braking
The less fast acceleration and hard braking you do, the closer you get to the maximum savings of 10%.

    • Why does Desjardins Insurance reward smoother driving?
Simply because fast acceleration and hard braking causes accidents, which can lead to increased premiums.

We know there are times when you might need to brake hard to avoid an accident or accelerate fast to make way for an emergency vehicle. But this doesn't happen every day.

  3. Time of Use
The less you drive at higher-risk times, the closer you get to the maximum savings of 5%.

    • Why does Desjardins Insurance reward driving at certain times of the day?
The risk of accidents increases at certain times—at night, for example, when fatigue can make drivers less alert and slow their reflexes.

That's why Ajusto associates a risk (low, moderate or high) with the time of day you take the wheel.

Your Ajusto data will ONLY be used to calculate more savings for you – it will never result in an increase to your rate or any other penalty.

You can monitor driving habits daily, and see how savings can change every month.

Simply log on to your Online Client Services account to view your personal dashboard. It shows your driver profile based on these 3 driving habits. But remember, the driving data collected is based on all those who have driven your vehicle.

Desjardins Insurance uses your driving data to calculate your potential savings at renewal. Until then, you can view your estimated discount, which is updated monthly.

Remember—the savings on your car insurance renewal are directly linked to your driving habits!

Frequently asked questions about the Ajusto program

Program

Ajusto is a new insurance program that's entirely free. It uses telematics to help you save on your auto insurance. This technology records your vehicle's annual kilometres, how many times your vehicle speeds up and brakes suddenly, and the time of day when the vehicle driven. Based on these driving habits, you could save up to 25% extra on your auto insurance premium at renewal! Your Ajusto data will ONLY be used to calculate more savings for you – it will never result in an increase to your rate or any other penalty.

To be eligible, you must:

You’ll benefit most from Ajusto if you drive less than 15,000 km a year. You could save as much as 25% on your renewal. If you drive more than 15,000 km a year, you could still save up to 15% on your renewal.

The Ajusto program is completely free, including the telematics device and shipping fees.

  • If you're not a Desjardins Insurance client: get an online quote or call us at 1–888–277–8726.
  • If you're a Desjardins Insurance client: call us at 1–888–277–8726.

Once you've signed up, you'll receive a welcome email explaining the next steps, with the Canada Post tracking number for your telematics device.

The telematics device comes with simple instructions (PDF) to help you install it in your vehicle. Once the device is installed, it will start recording the driving habits for your vehicle.

A few days after you install the device, you can log on to Online Client Services to view your vehicle's information and see how it will affect your potential savings. Desjardins Insurance uses the compiled data to calculate the savings on your auto insurance renewal.

The 3 factors related to the Ajusto program that influence your potential savings at renewal are:

  1. Kilometres
You can save up to 10% on your auto insurance when your vehicle is driven less than 15,000 km a year. The device will record the number of kilometres your vehicle is driven per day, and you'll receive personalized savings based on the annual result. The less your vehicle is driven, the more you save!

  2. Acceleration and braking
If you accelerate 13 km/h per second or more or brake 15 km/h per second or more, the device will consider this sudden. Your vehicle's result at the end of the year will determine how much you save—it could be up to 10%.

We know there are times when you might need to brake hard to avoid an accident or accelerate fast to make way for an emergency vehicle. But this doesn't happen every day.

  3. Time of day when your vehicle is driven
The risk of an accident is higher at some times of day than others. For example, night time is considered the riskiest time to drive because of fatigue and the reduced field of vision. Below is the risk associated with different times of day. The less your vehicle is driven during high-risk periods, the more you save, up to a maximum of 5%.

When you renew your policy (as long as the device has been installed for at least 160 days), you may be entitled to save up to an additional 25% your auto insurance premium at renewal!

To sign up for the program, you must have full insurance coverage, which includes Civil liability, Collision and upset and All perils other than collision or upset. You can add any other coverage you need.

You can terminate the Ajusto program at any time, without penalty, by calling us at 1–888–277–8726. If you withdraw your vehicle from the program and you do not wish to transfer the device to another eligible vehicle on the policy, each device must be returned using the self-addressed, stamped package that we will send to you. If you terminate the Ajusto program, the discount will be removed. You must remain enrolled in the program in order to receive the Ajusto discount.

Each device is linked to a single vehicle and collects data from that vehicle only. However, you can enroll in the program with more than one vehicle and install a device in each. All the data will appear on your online dashboard on the Online Client Services page; simply select which vehicle's data you want to see.

No. The Ajusto program is for passenger vehicles only and excludes motorcycles, ATVs and snowmobiles. If you're interested in our insurance products for commercial vehicles, you can get a free quote by calling us at 1-877-838-0031.

Only your name and address will be shared with iMetrik as they need this information to ship you the telematics device and accessories and will be deleted after the device is delivered and installed in your vehicle. Your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) will be provided by Desjardins General Insurance Group Inc. to iMetrik for the sole purpose of validating that the device is installed in the right car.

Your name, address, and VIN will only be used by iMetrik to fulfill the process directly linked to the UBI services and will not be transferred by iMetrik to any third party.

Clients

Yes, the data on your online dashboard is updated on a daily basis.

To view your data, go to Online Client Services, our 100% secure site, and log on to your account, which only you can access. You can view your results for each factor: kilometres, acceleration and braking, and time of day. You'll also see estimated savings for your auto insurance renewal. Just log on—it's easy!

The program is linked to the vehicle, so the driving habits of anyone who takes the wheel are used to calculate your savings when you renew.

No. The Ajusto program won't increase your insurance premium. It gives you the opportunity for additional savings on your auto insurance renewal. Your premium won't go up because of the data collected on driving habits for your vehicle. At renewal, your premium will be calculated as usual, based on the usual insurance rules. If your situation changes, a number of factors can raise your premium (if you have an accident during the year, for example) or lower it (if you move nearer your place of work, for example).

If you put your vehicle in storage, you reduce your vehicle's annual kilometres and your vehicle no longer speeds up, brakes or is driven at high-risk times of day. However, your data won't be updated on the device while your vehicle is in storage. We recommend unplugging the device when you store your vehicle.

You can benefit from the Ajusto program throughout Canada and the United States. Thanks to telematics technology, the device collects data from your vehicle and records it on your online dashboard.

Device

Unfortunately not. The device is compatible only with vehicles built in 1998 or later; older vehicles don't have an OBD port (also called a diagnostic port). Our device uses the latest technology, but for technical reasons, it’s not compatible with all vehicles. For more information on the device, call us at 1-888-277-8726.

You can regularly check what information has been recorded by visiting the Online Client Services website. If you notice that your information hasn't been updated, there are two ways to check whether the device is working.

First, make sure that the light on the device is on or blinking. Normally the light is on when the engine is running and remains on for a short while after you turn off the engine so data can be transmitted. The light blinks when the engine is turned off and the device is in sleep mode. This means it's no longer connected to cellular and GPS networks and that its features are deactivated to save on power consumption.

If the light is out, unplug the device for about 15 seconds. If the light doesn't go on when you reconnect the device, call us at 1-866-710-4759.

The device uses a cellular connection to send data. If you're in a remote area, a tunnel, or an underground parking lot, or if the device is too close to a metallic surface, data may not be transferred, even if the light is on. In that case, wait until you return to an area with cellular coverage or move the device farther from the metallic surface.

Unless you have a technical problem or plan to put your vehicle in storage, you must leave the device plugged into the OBD port as long as you're enrolled in the Ajusto program. Refer to the instructions sent with the device to determine when it should be unplugged.

The device operates mainly when your engine is running. This limits battery consumption when your engine is turned off and significantly reduces the device's impact on your battery.

If the device is lost, stolen or damaged, call us at 1-866-710-4759 so we can send you another device as soon as possible.

installation

The device plugs into the OBD port in you car. You can use the the tool provided to locate it. Find a clean, flat surface near the OBD port for the device. Remove the protective film from the fastening strip and press firmly to stick it onto the surface.

Refer to the quick and easy self-installation guide (PDF) sent with the device if you need more help with installation.

The red light indicates that the device is working and shows its general status. The light stays on when the device is operating and blinks every 15 seconds when the device is in sleep mode.
