The Caisse populaire Desjardins de Joliette was founded on April 29, 1940. Nazaire Martel was the founding President and Arthur Beauséjour the first Manager. It was actually in the latter's home that the new financial institution began operations. The Caisse populaire Desjardins de Joliette quickly became a financial success. On May 31, 1953, it reached its first million in assets. This was only the beginning of a steady growth trend that continues even today. On April 30, 2000, following the merger of the Caisses populaires Desjardins de Crabtree and Sainte-Thérèse, assets totalled $278,995,900.
As at December 31, 2006, the Caisse populaire Desjardins de Joliette had 18,677 members and 115 employees. The Caisse held $479,971,318 in assets.
In June 2007, the members of the Desjardins de Joliette (Joliette, Crabtree and Sainte-Thérèse), de L'Industrie (Saint-Pierre, Saint-Paul and Saint-Jean-Baptiste) and La Sablière (Notre-Dame-des-Prairies and Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes) caisses unanimously voted to merge their 3 caisses. On January 1, 2008, the new Caisse Desjardins de Joliette ranked 3rd among the largest caisses in Quebec, with $850 million in assets and over 37,000 members.
3 years later, on December 31, 2010, the Caisse Desjardins de Joliette had $853 million in assets. In June 2011, it reached its first billion in assets. On September 14, 2011, during an Extraordinary General Meeting, members of the Desjardins du Christ-Roi (Joliette) and Desjardins de Joliette caisses unanimously voted to merge their 2 caisses.
On January 1, 2012, the new Caisse Desjardins de Joliette will rank 2nd among the largest caisses in the Lanaudière region. With $2.6 billion in business volume and $1.4 billion in assets, it will serve over 53,600 members. This strong organization, with a rich and diversified expertise, is a major employer in the Lanaudière region, with 225 employees and 7 service centres.
The new Caisse Desjardins de Joliette is committed to pursuing its mission of contributing to improving the economic and social well-being of people and communities, by being very involved in the community, awarding donations, sponsorships, scholarships and playing an active role in the economic, cultural and social life of the community.
