It is a card linked to an account to which you can transfer funds to make purchases and withdrawals. The amount of any transaction made using the card is automatically deducted from the account.

The Desjardins prepaid card is reloadable, meaning you can transfer funds to it at any time. It can be used to make purchases at any point of sale that accepts Visa, including online, telephone and mail order purchases. It can also be used to make withdrawals at Interac network ATMs across Canada and Visa/PLUS network ATMs around the world.

No. The prepaid card is not a credit card. It's a payment method that's used in the same way as cash. The prepaid card does not get reported to credit rating agencies because you can only spend the amount you've transferred to your card.

Each time you use your card, the amount of purchase is deducted from your available balance. Since it isn't a credit card, no interest charges apply to ATM withdrawals.

No. The Desjardins prepaid card is not a gift card. Unlike gift cards available in some stores, Desjardins prepaid cards:

  • have no predetermined cash value
  • are reloadable
  • cannot be given as a gift

They can be used anywhere, and not just in a single store or chain.

To get a Desjardins prepaid card, both primary and additional cardholders must provide personal information. The cards are then mailed to them.

Any Quebec resident age 16 and over can apply for a Desjardins prepaid card.

Desjardins prepaid cards are particularly useful for:

  • consumers seeking a secure payment method not linked to a bank account or credit card to make online or phone purchases
  • people looking for a way to manage their day-to-day expenses, travel budget or online purchases
  • travellers looking for a secure payment method abroad with access to foreign currency
  • people who don’t have a credit card or have a restricted credit limit and want a payment method with access to the Visa network
  • parents, to give their children their allowance at set times
  • teenagers age 16 and over who want to make their own purchases

To be the primary cardholder of a prepaid card account, teenagers must ask their parents to sign a consent form at a caissse or parents can give their teenagers an additional card linked to their prepaid card account.

Yes. The Desjardins prepaid card has an annual fee of $6.95 for each primary account and $4.95 for each additional card. Foreign currency conversion fees of 2.5% also apply to purchases and withdrawals made abroad. Desjardins offers members exclusive advantages. No. the Desjardins prepaid card cannot help you build a good credit file as it is not a credit card.

The funds used are your own. This is why your solvency is not verified when a Desjardins prepaid card is issued.

Yes. As a primary cardholder, you can request additional cards be linked to the account. The primary cardholder and additional cardholders share the same account, or the same funds. Funds transferred to the account by the primary cardholder are available not only to him or her, but to each additional cardholder as well.

As the primary cardholder, you are fully responsible for transactions made with additional cards linked to the account. All funds deposited to the account are considered to belong to the primary cardholder.

Please note: A primary prepaid cardholder between the ages of 16 and 18 cannot link additional cards to his or her account.

Yes. You can have more than one Visa Desjardins prepaid card account.

Yes. There is an expiry date on your card. You can use your card until the last day of the month of the expiry date.

The card, as well as any additional card linked to the account, is valid for 4 years. It is renewed automatically and a new card issued prior to the expiry date.

You can sign up to receive card renewal alerts on AccèsD. The alert informs you that your card is expiring and that a new card will soon be forwarded to you.

To sign up for the Alert service:

  1. Log in to AccèsD
  2. Click on the Profile and preferences icon right-hand portion of the screen, and then on the Alert service link.

When your card expires it is replaced with a new card, so you can continue using the funds remaining in your account.

You can cancel your card by calling a Desjardins Card Services customer service representative at 514-397-4415 or 1-800-363-3380 (toll free).

If you wish to close your account and there are funds remaining, the following 2 options are available depending on whether or not you are a Desjardins member:

Desjardins member cardholders

You can transfer the remaining funds from your Desjardins prepaid card to your Desjardins personal chequing account (PCA) on AccèsD:

  • Log in to AccèsD
  • On the Operations/Transactions page, select Transfers between accounts.
  • Select your Desjardins prepaid card as the source account ("From") and your personal chequing account (PCA) as the destination account ("To").
  • Enter the amount of remaining funds on your Visa Desjardins prepaid card and click on Validate.

Desjardins non-member cardholders:

You can:

  • Make a withdrawal from an ATM before your card expires.
  • Speak with a Desjardins Card Services customer service representative by calling 514-397-4415 or 1-800-363-3380 (toll free) to have a cheque in the amount of the remaining funds sent to you.

Yes. There are 3 types of alerts available:

  • Minimum balance reached alert: informs you when you reach the minimum balance you've specified.
  • Card renewal alert: informs you that your card is expiring and that a new card will soon be forwarded to you.
  • Card suspended for authentification alert: informs you when your card has been temporarily deactivated for security reasons, to validate the information on file.

To sign up for the Alert service:

  1. Log in to AccèsD
  2. On the Transactions/Operations page, click on User file in the upper right-hand portion of the screen.

Contact a Desjardins Card Services customer service representative immediately at 514-397-4415 or 1-800-363-3380 (toll free) to let us know.

We will cancel the stolen card and issue a new one. The prepaid card includes Zero Liability in the event of fraud. This means you are not held financially responsible for unauthorized use of your card, as long as you, or an additional cardholder, if applicable, have adhered to the Visa Desjardins prepaid card terms and conditions. In this event, Desjardins will reimburse you for any amount fraudulently obtained from your card.
