Your Desjardins Access Card is one of the best ways to get cash abroad because it gives you access to thousands of ATMs on every continent.
You can withdraw local currency at any ATM that carries the Plus symbol. The exchange rate for that day will be applied, plus a $3.00 fee per withdrawal. However, in certain American states (13 in total), the ATM owner may also charge a service fee. Your withdrawal limit remains the same as at home.
Consult the ATM locator on the VISA Web site to find the location of ATMs on your itinerary.
Across Canada, Desjardins Access Cards are accepted wherever you see the Interac symbol. Network access fees apply ($1.50) and the ATM owner may also charge service fees.
Another economical way to obtain cash when you travel to the U.S. is to make a purchase with withdrawal (when available) at any one of the 1.5M NYCE merchants. There are no network access fees. Note that not all merchants offer their customers the possibility to make a purchase with withdrawal and that many set a withdrawal limit.
Finally, with a PIN (personal identification number) linked to your VISA Desjardins card, you can get cash advances at any VISA International or Interac ATM worldwide. Remember to assign a PIN to your card before you leave. To do so, go to the nearest Desjardins caisse. You can also deposit money in your VISA Desjardins account before your departure, which could allow you to get interest-free cash advances.
Note: Due to frequent changes, ATM locator data on the PLUS network may not be up-to-date. Therefore, it is important that you check your information before your departure and plan for alternate payment options (traveller's cheques or other) in the event of a problem.
