School caisse

A mission of savings and education for over 100 years!

In 1907, six years after experimenting with the penny-saving concept, Alphonse Desjardins officially laid the groundwork for a savings service in the Lévis region. The founder of the caisses populaires held the strong belief that money-saving habits were acquired at a young age. He wanted to make children independent, responsible and competent upon entering school through the acquisition of cooperation values and sound financial management practices. The school caisse, or penny saving, was born.

The school caisse operates within elementary schools but under the authority and supervision of a local Desjardins caisse. And because deposits are made at school, children can save easily and systematically.

Advantages

  • No service charges
  • Interest rate higher than an ordinary account
  • No minimum deposit
  • Interest calculated daily and paid monthly
  • Deposits made at school (withdrawals made only at a caisse)
  • Child is in charge of the account, unless otherwise specified by parents

The school caisse:

  • introduces children to saving habits in cooperation with the school
  • instills basic notions about saving, thriftiness and cooperation
  • kindles individual and collective entrepreneurial spirit
  • enhances the child's autonomy and sense of responsibility

Youth Dividends

Are your children learning to save money through their school caisse? Now there is a special member dividend just for them: Youth Dividends1. These fixed-amount member dividends were created to highlight the savings efforts of young people who are school caisse members.

Youth Dividends reward school caisse members not only for the amount they have saved, but for their discipline and commitment in making regular deposits to their school caisse account. For the 2010-2011 school year, participating caisses paid nearly $365,000 to 35,880 kids who were eligible for Youth Dividends.

In mid-June, eligible young members received a letter announcing the news, along with a small gift, and dividends were paid into their accounts at the end of June 2011.

For the 2011-2012 school year, Youth Dividends will be deposited into accounts of children who have made at least 7 deposits, regardless of the amount.

Did you know?

Some caisses offer educational kits and activity books (in French and English for all ages) to parents and children who may or not be members of a scool caisse. The kits are fun and educational. Ask your caisse!
