Even though the rights of gays, lesbians and transsexuals are increasingly recognized in Québec, the fight against homophobia is far from over.
Homophobia is when a person or persons are excluded because of their homosexuality (real or alleged) and their rights denied. Homophobia is also psychological or physical violence, defamation of character, hatred and the discrimination resulting from it.
The consequences of homophobia are far from mundane. Studies have shown that the suicide rate among homosexual youths is three times higher than heterosexual youths. It is also true that in Canada today, more gay and lesbian youths are victims of suicide than AIDS. Why? Because homophobia, rejection and exclusion have a direct impact on the self-esteem and physical and psychological health of the people targeted.
How many young children are made fun of or rejected by their peers because one of their parents is homosexual? How many teenagers are weighed down by their heavy secret, afraid that they will be rejected or judged because of their difference? How many parents reject their children's homosexuality and distance themselves from them at the very moment when they most need their support, understanding and love?
For all of these raisons, we must fight against homophobia and allow all citizens to be free to live out their differences and be respected for them. Fighting against homophobia is each of our responsibility.
