Drinking and driving, a high price to pay

People who drive with their faculties impaired don't always lose their lives. But they may lose their shirts.

Take a look at what can happen if you're stopped with a blood alcohol level over 80 mg/100 ml.

Let's say it's your first offense.

  • Your driver's license is immediately suspended for 30 days.
  • Once you're convicted, you lose your license for a year.
  • You're required to take and pass the Alcofrein educational program.
  • You have to get a summary evaluation at a specialized centre to assess the risk of reoffending.
  • If you receive a negative summary evaluation, you're subject to a mandatory complete evaluation.
  • To get a new license, you have to keep an alcohol ignition interlock device in your car for one year.
  • Reference period for reoffending: 10 years.

Just imagine what happens after a second or third offence!
