Ultimate: Are you game?

This year, beat the back-to-school blues by practising a new, demanding but non-contact team sport: ultimate frisbee. Ultimate mixes football, basketball and soccer, but is played with a flying disc between 2 teams of 7 players on an area roughly the size of a football field. A number of Quebec universities are already training their own teams.

Ultimate is self-officiated, a part of what players call "the spirit of the game." It emphasizes sportsmanship over competition, which is a draw for many players and spectators. It promotes mutual respect and is a good workout in a social context. It continuously tests the players' speed, endurance and agility.

Are you suited for ultimate?

A recent study revealed that 29% of all reported injuries were injuries to the knees and legs, including twisted ankles. It also reported injuries to the tibia, shoulders, eyes and a variety of more or less severe bruises. The study also demonstrated that warm-ups and adequate training reduce the risk of injuries.
