Crossing borders
Customs and immigration rules vary from one country to another, but it is essential to abide by them, since international security – and the safety of travellers – often depend on it.
Never leave without your passport!
- Even if the country you are visiting does not require it, take along your Canadian passport. This will make it easier to prove your identity, both for entering the foreign country and when you return to Canada!
- Make sure that your passport will remain valid for at least six months after your departure date. Some countries will deny you entry if your passport is due to expire sooner than that.
- Protect your passport from loss or theft. It is a highly sought-after document on the black market and is difficult to replace, for security reasons.
Comply with rules and regulations
- Comply with customs and airline rules and regulations. Do not carry prohibited items even if they are hidden at the bottom of your suitcase! And do not lie to custom agents; it could get you in a lot of trouble.
- Keep a constant eye on your bags and luggage to avoid having someone take advantage of you to carry illegal items across the border.
- Do not violate the laws of foreign countries. Legal procedures and human rights are not the same everywhere.
