How to get a student loan

By mail

Fill out the application for student financial aid prepared by the ministère de l'Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport. You can either get the form at your school's financial aid office, or download it and print it from the Quebec government's Aide financière aux études (AFE) website. Once completed, mail it to the AFE.

Online

Submit your loan application online. First, get "Online Access to Your File" on the Aide financière aux etudes (AFE) website. When using online services for the first time, you have to choose a password. As you fill out the online application form fields, only the pages that apply to you will be displayed. If a section is not properly filled in, you will not be able to continue on to the next section. Once the form is duly completed, you will be told which documents to provide, depending on your situation. To fill out and submit your application online, see On-Line Access to Your File! on the AFE website.

What happens once the form has been submitted to AFE?

About 3 weeks after the application had been submitted, the Aide financière aux études will send you a Financial Assistance Statement telling you the total amount of financial assistance granted and a breakdown of the instalments. You must then go to your educational institution's financial aid office to get your Guarantee Certificate and Loan Agreement. With these 2 documents in hand, go to your financial institution. Once your file has been registered, you'll start receiving payments in your account.

Did you know?

At Desjardins, even if you are studying out of town, you can continue doing business with your local caisse through another one that's closer to your school.

Financial assistance payment procedures

To avoid complicating the repayment of your loan, it is very important that you be the only account holder at the caisse. If the financial aid payment is deposited into a joint account or into a parental account in your name, your periodic or monthly payments will be delayed so they can first be validated.

Applying for a loan for the first time? To make sure you don't forget anything, see Your first application on the AFE website.
