A camping trip outside your province?

Think about security!

Fans of the great outdoors, you should plan your trip ahead in order to travel worry-free! In case of problems, it is important to have everything you need at hand. No matter how careful you are, you can get seriously injured in the blink of an eye.

Eating

Food security is important. Here are some tips to help you eat well.

  • Activity longer than 3 hours. Plan to bring along at least a snack and a non-alcoholic beverage.
  • Snack. Bring light foods that are easy to carry and that provide plenty of energy, such as citrus fruits or carrot sticks.
  • Lunch. Keep your lunch cool. Use insulated containers, freeze water in leak-proof containers or pack a small box of juice that has been frozen overnight to chill your lunch.

Camping

A little planning and a lot of common sense are all you need to be a happy and safe camper!

  • First-aid kit. Be prepared to treat injuries and allergies.
  • Campfire. Keep sand or water near the campfire to put out the fire.
  • Clothes and fragrances. Try to avoid wearing fragrances and bright colours. They can attract wasps.
  • Cooler. Store food in a cooler in your car, not in your tent. The smell of food attracts wild animals and insects.

Taking care of your health

To travel worry-free, make sure you pack your Travel Insurance before you leave your home province. It protects you against the financial consequences of an illness or injury that might occur during a trip.

If you're travelling in Canada, Travel Insurance, underwritten by Desjardins Financial Security, complements the provincial health insurance plan. In fact, the provincial health insurance plans reimburse you only for the same type of care you would receive in your own province. Travel Insurance takes care of additional costs incurred elsewhere in Canada or abroad.

How much money can additional costs amount to?

Here are 2 examples of travellers who bought travel insurance before leaving for their vacation. Their insurer paid for the additional costs when they needed health care. In the first case, a traveller to New Brunswick suffered a burst appendix and was hospitalized in a semi-private room. He received the services of a driver to return to Quebec in his own vehicle. The expenses paid out by the insurer were close to $800. In the second case, a vacationer who was visiting British Columbia, received a refund for his hospital expenses and was repatriated back to his home province by plane, along with breathing apparatus and a nurse. The expenses paid out by the insurer were close to $6,000.
