Going on a trip with your parents, a couple of friends or on your own or dreaming of exploring 1 or more countries in a few years? Check out this list of tips to help you save money during your trip.


Getting foreign currency beforehand	Visit your caisse to get the foreign currency you’ll need before you leave. Go several days in advance because some currencies (e.g., the euro) have to be ordered in advance by the caisse. Avoid exchange offices located in airports; their rates (and fees) are often higher. Keep an eye out for the best exchange rate and make sure you get the most for your money. For example, if US$1 (US dollar) today is worth C$1.10 (Canadian dollar) and C$0.90 a few days later, you’ll save $0.10 per US dollar bought if you wait a little to get the amount you’ll need. Lodging	Opt for youth hostels. In addition to cheaper lodging, they’ll provide you with a place to meet other travellers and to prepare meals. You’ll find that it’s even more economical to camp, if you have the gear!
Eating	It’s better to go to the grocery stores and prepare your own meals whenever possible. Eating 3 meals a day at the restaurant is expensive!
Touring	Guided tours can be pricey and aren’t always worth it. If you feel safe in the country you’re visiting, you can tour the area on foot and talk to the people who live there?it won’t cost you a thing! Get away from tourist spots (as long as it’s safe!). Not only will you learn more about the country’s culture, but you’ll be able to find lodging and meals for less.
