Health break... or time for a smoke?

You've heard it all before: "Smoking causes cancer and makes your fingers yellow" or "Kissing a smoker is like kissing an ashtray." Sure. We know you hear this every day. But let's face the facts–too many young Canadians are still tempted even though the vast majority doesn't smoke.

Smoking and health

If you think that because you’re young and healthy, you won’t get any smoking-related diseases, think again!

  • Tobacco use can cause or aggravate breathing problems (coughing, asthma, the flu, bronchitis), even for young people.
  • Smoking when you’re young increases the risk of lung cancer.
  • Smoking harms young people’s physical fitness in terms of both performance and endurance.

Smoking and money

How much does a pack of cigarettes cost? In one month, how much do you spend to buy cigarettes? Just think of what you could do with that money: buy a new CD or a shirt, go to the movies?

Did you know that smokers pay more for insurance?

Insurers calculate insurance rates based on age, sex, state of health and whether the person smokes or not. Poor health and smoking significantly increase the cost of insurance: in fact, the cost can double!
