Disability – Income

Allows insureds who have become disabled as a result of illness or injury to receive monthly benefits to compensate for lost wages during the period of disability. Also known as wage loss replacement insurance.

Specially designed for the self-employed or salaried employees not covered by a group insurance plan.

Features

• Monthly benefit amount: between $250 and $6,000 depending on income.
  • Generally speaking, benefit is equivalent to 66 2/3% of the first $4,000 of monthly income and 50% of income exceeding $4,000.
  • Other income and benefits are also taken into account when calculating the benefit amount.
• Benefit indexation option: to protect benefits from inflation, benefit indexation option can be selected at the time of the contract to ensure benefits are indexed according to the Consumer Price Index.
• Benefit period: 5 years or up to age 65.
• Waiting period: 2, 4, 8 or 17 weeks.
• Definition of disability: inability to perform job duties (position held prior to disability) for the first 24 or 60 months, as elected by the insured at the time of the contract. After this time, inability by the insured to perform the duties of a replacement position.
• Available to individuals aged 18 to 60.
• Cost is based on criteria selected and insured's profile, including monthly benefit amount, waiting period, insured's employment category, province of residence, age, gender, and whether a smoker or non-smoker.
• Coverage period: until the age of 65.
