Eco-friendly renovations

A sustainable home is also a safe, healthy and nurturing home. This spring, as many of us renovate or beautify our homes and apartments, there are multiple ways that we can reduce the negative environmental impact of our living spaces.

Efficiency pays!

Making your home more energy efficient is not only an eco-friendly choice, it pays over time through savings and immediately through the many energy efficiency subsidies that now exist. When you choose Energy Star approved appliances, sealed window units or add heat recovery systems to your home, you are rewarded by one of many programs now offered by Hydro Québec or Gaz Métro.

Green alternatives

There are now many alternative products on the market which replace traditionally toxic substances with non-toxic equivalents or recycle and reuse existing building materials. Look for eco paints with low or zero VOC (volatile organic compound) content, recycled paints, water-based glues, stains and solvents, or natural oil based finishes.

Hire green architects

For more extensive renovations or construction, consider hiring architects that specialize in green building. Such architects can help you successfully incorporate environmental systems into your home such as green roofs, solar heating and grey water-recovery services.
