Traditionally, global trade has favoured importers and resellers of products while the providers of raw materials from developing countries were left out of the large share of trade profits.
Fair Trade, on the other hand, is a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect, which seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalized producers and workers - especially in developing countries in the South.
Fair Trade certification ensures a safe and healthy working environment, including fair pay, to the producers. To be sure a product is truly Fair Trade certified, look for a Fair Trade label on the packaging. If the product is imported by a Canadian company, it must bear the Transfair Fair Trade logo to be considered genuinely 'Fair Trade'.
