Caisses Desjardins du Québec and Caisses populaires de l'Ontario [Change site]
History has always played a particularly important role in the Desjardins Group. It continually nourishes the feeling of belonging to the institution created by Alphonse Desjardins. It also offers points of reference to orient the decision-making. Proud of their history, the officers of the Group created the Société historique Alphonse-Desjardins (SHAD) in 1979. Its mission is simple: to safeguard and promote the history and heritage of the Desjardins Group and its founder, to the benefit of current and future generations.
SHAD administers the home and property that belonged to the founder of the Desjardins caisses. Maison Alphonse-Desjardins, the same home that was the birthplace of the first caisse, and that still stands on Rue du Mont-Marie, in Lévis, welcomes around 12,000 visitors each year. Inside, visitors discover an interpretation centre devoted to the founder, to the history of Desjardins and to the promotion of cooperative ideology.
