Canadian financial institutions are steering current payment methods toward chip technology with a view to reducing card skimming.

Desjardins Access Cards, VISA Desjardins credit cards, as well as all payment solutions offered to Desjardins merchants will move toward the new technology.

Though magnetic strip cards are still safe, chip cards provide better security:

• PINs will replace cardholder signatures for credit card transactions at the point of sale.
• PINs make it more difficult for people to use lost or stolen cards.
• Chip cards provide increased transaction security because they feature perfected mechanisms that efficiently protect against card fraud and skimming.

Accepting cards

Cards issued by Desjardins will still have a magnetic strip and will be accepted until the chip card technology is used everywhere.
